In other news, I made a dangerous discovery today. (My grandfather got me hooked!) At that price they may as well be handing them out on street corners with clean needles. First one's free, kiddo.

It's just ridiculous at this point. I may have to hold my breath and close my eyes and STOMP!

p.s. Don't think I didn't hear the Sandra B. inflection.

Obligatory Restoration Hardware candy story:

When I was living in Wigan, Lancashire, my friend Dave told me about these horrendous lozenges used by people with no sense of taste or smell left: Victory Vs. Of course I was intrigued, so I told the stockist at the corner shop that I LOVED Victory Vs, and would he please order some? Of course he did, and I bought one roll of them and left him with a carton full of them that no one else wanted. Very immoral of me really.

Seemingly unrelated candy episode:

Upon my departure from Wigan, my friend Louise insisted that I bring home Uncle Joe's Mint Balls as a souvenir. Because even though I didn't like them, they were extremely evocative of Wigan and couldn't be found anywhere in the U.S.

When I returned home I discovered this new shop, Restoration Hardware, where they carried not only Victory Vs, but also Uncle Joe's Mint Balls. O the chagrin!

I thought King Leo was a figment of my imagination until RH started carrying the regular peppermint sticks a few Christmases ago, which are fine and it was very thoughtful of S____ to remember my fixation & make them a regular holiday gift ... but the soft sticks!!! Ohhhh my gosh, they had better be as good as I remember or my childhood's going down in flames. Of course I ordered three tins.

My other grandfather was from Nashville where Goo Goo Clusters originated! Mmmmmmmmmmm. My entire life is pretty much tangled up in sweets of the South. (Although I don't think King Leo peppermints are necessarily Southern. They just taste better there.)

What are Victory Vs like?? For some reason I am imagining horehound lozenges (which I love).

As I recall they taste like a mouthful of Vicks Vapo-Rub, but maybe with some chlorophyll added in?

There's a book called Candyfreak written by a fellow with quite a connoisseur's appreciation for regional candies. His favorite is the Valomilk, but it doesn't do it for me. I'm still wanting to try the Alabama Hotcake, the Subway Sadie, and the Old King Tut. But we do agree on one thing: the demise of the Caravelle is deeply mournworthy.

I almost banished my Best of Toyah CD to the storage locker the other day, but now you've prompted me to let it continue living in the apartment a little longer. Imagine my shock and horror several years ago when I was visiting London, and turned on the TV for some late night white noise before retiring, and found Mrs. Fripp hosting a wretched, middle-of-the-road late-night sex-chat show. Eek! Prostitute indeed!

It's pretty sad, isn't it?

BUT TOYAH! I distinctly remember an interview in Star Hits where you said you'd have pink hair FOREVER!!!!

I knoooow! I'm sure she just has better things to do, but really, would it be so hard to pop in now & then? I miss AIM-ing with her too. It's been literally ages since I used AIM at all, come to think of it. Maybe I should investigate...

Wait. Metal clits?!
