today in vienna.

A typical Vienna streetscene.

This is Judenplatz, which was the Jewish section of Vienna in medieval times. The plaque in the middle of the narrow, white building in the background "gleefully" records the expulsion of the Jews in 1421. The statue in front of it is a memorial to Ephraim Lessing, a German playwright who encouraged tolerance. It is a replacement for the identical statue which was destroyed in 1939. The large, square monument in the center of the square is a memorial to the 60,000 Austrian Jews killed by the Nazis.

Ruprechtskirche, dedicated to St. Ruprecht, patron of salters. (My London ancestors were salters.) This is the oldest church in Vienna.

The interior of Ruprechtskirche.

This is, believe it or not, the LEAST offensive of the baroque makeovers the tacky Viennese subjected their lovely gothic churches to. This is Augustinerkirche.

Riders warming up outside the Spanish Riding School before their morning lessons.

Photographs are not allowed inside the school, and I was warned of this fact after taking this one above, which is why I don't have anything better to show you. This was fun to watch! And listen to – they do it to Viennese composers. This is just the morning exercises, since there is no actual performance while I'm here. Alas!

This is what the riders wear. They are all pink-cheeked, very grave looking Austrian boys, barely out of their teens. They are assigned a young horse (about 4 years old) and they grow together as horse and rider for four years until both are ready to perform.

Sachertorte mit melange!

Cardinalschnitte mit milchkaffe!

the riders' costume with the off-center-placed boots and hat is oddly unsettling.
