oh no. more pictures...

Due to my masochistic nature, I shall relent to the delighted squeals of glee with which others have met the photographic evidence of my Abject Misery throughout the lamentable 1980s.

Being spooky with friend Anne, late high school?

Possibly after clubbing, or perhaps studying (naaah), with Hope.

These are in my first apartment, on lovely Monument Avenue in Richmond. I don't know what's more damaging to my doom-n-gloom credibility, the cassette player or the floral sheets.

The Milwaukee's Best cans, at least, I can explain. We would never, ever have bought The Beast if any acceptable substitute had been available, but I remember this night well; it was the 4th of July and the one store that would sell me alcoholic beverages was all out of Black Label. Horrors! See, Black Label was Punk Rock; Milwaukee's Best was Butt Rock. Alas, here we are, MB in hand. I almost didn't post this because of it. Oh yes, this is one week after S____ & I met; this is us.

So the ultra-death look I was sporting in the photobooth pictures I posted last week was growing most tiresome to me, and I bleached my hair about nine times in a month. It wasn't too healthy, and I never got it white like I wanted, so I tried this.

Sort of Jane's Addiction influenced. That's a JA T-shirt I've got on, purchased right before this at a show in Norfolk that was $1. (The show, not the T-shirt.) I didn't like the red as it faded to pink so I went blue.

Shortly thereafter I was lighting a cigarette, loads of Aquanet holding some sort of creation aloft, and the forelock went up in flames. As the whole lot had the consistency of cotton candy, I let my hairdresser lop it all off (whilst watching Bauhaus videos) into a short & sleek black bob-type-thing.

This one is at our first apartment together. We spent about a month painting the place and then lived there about three months. (It was falling apart & poorly heated. But $400 for a whole house! But, while fine for a Summer of Excess, it wasn't quite what we needed for winter.) Anyway...

My hair grew out quickly & I took pictures like this to commemorate it before I chopped it all off again. This is in the ultra-fabulous Hollywood Cemetery, resting place of Presidents Monroe, Tyler, and Davis (of the Confederacy, silly) as well as many other luminaries.

I guess we're to the end of the '80s here, but this picture is funny because it was 1990 and we already missed the '80s so Lance (lancehk) had a Remember the '80s party. S____ decided that they were better forgotten at that point and Remembered the 1880s instead. Here we are at home before the party.

And here's something from the beginning of the '80s, just to scare you.

I don't remember roo shoes, but they sound cute!

I liked my Lacoste shirts. I had about a dozen but I had to stop wearing them circa 7th grade because Izod licensed the logo & started making them in things like 50%/50% terrycloth.

my goodness! i so wish that i had taken more pictures of myself during the late 80's/ early 90s! Perhaps when I get a scanner, I can treat you to my RAVER PICTURES from the 90s!!! Yeah!!

maybe, though, we are not far along enough from those days. perhaps i need a few more years before i can safely put them out for public abuse.

glad I don't have any, but...
Oh, no, they would still be fun!

I went to a few raves during that period. I think I even went to one in MD.
Took no pictures; am very glad of that ;)

Re: glad I don't have any, but...
There is a picture of me out there with a teething toy around my neck.

I knew the whole time that I would laugh at myself in the future. I used to tell people all of the time,

"Do you really think that you're going to be able to share any of this sub-culture with your children? Do you really think that in 5 years you're not going to think, kee-rist! what the HELL was i wearing?"

I had a good time being the prom queen of the dc-baltimore rave scene!

you & monica madhouse
Haha! Yeah, I knew too many people who insisted that rave culture was a permanent, significant alteration of societal fabric. I was just, like, Huh, this must be the new disco.

Re: you & monica madhouse
YES! People would argue with me about it all of the time! I love, love, love popular culture- if for it's impermanence alone! Before rave, I was an angry riot grrl, a depressed goff, and an indie space pop connoisseur! (not necessarily in that order). Now? Well.

I’m post-everything… as that seems to be the hot and hip trend.

Re: glad I don't have any, but...
(ok...i just wrote a long post & deleted it in my haste. sorry if i repeat myself)

those photos are Priceless !!!!!! including the polaroid you posted last night of jeff ... sooo good. & i remember the scandal when that place burned down.

i was reading one of your old posts and you mentioned Keary, of course you would know him, too- i never knew him so well, as he was always breezing in & out of town back then. although, i did have dinner with him last summer when he was staying with our mutual friend aimee. i was very close with his friend Garth though.

and yes, kim/scott..... we must have met or something. i was forever eating pills with them. i remember being on the floor at some Insomnia party with kim & my best friend at the time, Andy... we were completely off our faces and putting stickers all over everyone that said "Special Feature", because at the time everyone was throwing that word "Feature" around all the time. we though it was this Stroke of Geniusssss on our part.....lol. oh, memories. mine are all so tawdry.

artemis: IIIIIIIIIII was the prom queen of the balt/dc rave scene, me me me meeee....
no, honestly, i bet we know some of the same people, too...rise/fever/etcetc?
& i am gonna totally take it there & post some photos - but you will have to add me if you wanna see them cuz there is No Way i am not locking up these little gems.

Re: glad I don't have any, but...
I'll bet that we have many, many, many in common! I am going to coffee today with Brian (ebbenflow). Pete (rhombus) is visiting me next weekend. I just went to a wedding with a bunch of dorks from V-Rave (poot from dc, waterzooi from boston or whatever). HA! I am adding you right away. We are practically related. I might have babysat you in the bathroom at fever... I was famous for that.... so sped up that I became everyone's mother....

HA! Where do you live now?
Feb. 11th, 2002 04:45 pm (UTC)
Artemis, what oola is talking about is a funny small-world conversation we had last night over here. You might enjoy--stone age Richmond gossip, blah blah blah...
Feb. 12th, 2002 05:20 am (UTC)

vvvespagrrrl used to live in Richmond. She may have been just after your time. I met her randomly again because someone on my friend's list mentioned her uncommon name...

I had better Lacoste's than you.

if I ever see my parents again, i will dig up the old photos of a cheeky 4 yr old lad running round the hotel swimming pools of Asia with his father's sunglasses, and a lacoste shirt for every day of the week
